I-864

Affidavit of support (I-864)

Promise to financially support a family member immigrating to the U.S. Required with most family-based cases.

This guide explains what the form is — not whether you should file it. Only a licensed attorney or BIA-accredited representative can advise you on eligibility.

Form I-864 is the Affidavit of Support — a legally binding contract in which a U.S. sponsor promises to financially support an immigrating family member.

U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident petitioners (and sometimes joint sponsors) file this form as part of most family-based immigrant visa cases.
